Virginia is for ALL Lovers (Again)
Last November, Virginia voters went to the polls and elected an entire slate of Democratic (and pro-LGBT rights) slate of state-wide officials, including the governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. As a result, the recently sworn in Virginia Attorney General, Mark Herring, said in an email to The Associated Press that it is his official opinion that Virginia’s ban on marriage equality violates the Virginia and the U.S. Constitutions.
This means, when a Virginia same-sex marriage case goes before a state or federal court, the state attorney general will side WITH same-sex couples – not against us!
The attorney general’s announcement comes just a week or two after court rulings in Utah and Oklahoma saw federal judges strike down bans on marriage equality in those states.
In 2006, Virginia voters approved the same-sex marriage ban 57% to 43% but a recent Quinnipiac University poll found that 50% of registered voters in Virginia now support marriage equality and only 43% oppose it.
Regardless of your marital status, don’t forget that LGBT partners – especially if you have or plan to have children – need to draw-up legal documents like wills and trusts to make sure your family is protected no matter how the legal winds are blowing. If you’re not sure what legal documents you need for your particular circumstances, take our short survey and we’ll help you figure it out!
