First, even though the Supreme Court overturned parts of the federal law known as the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), if you are legally married, your marital status isn’t worth as much as a straight union if you live in a state that does not recognize your marriage. And in many places, you can still be discriminated in other ways, too, such as in employment, adoption, tax liability, inheritance, immigration, and even in your ability to recover damages in tort law. And this isn’t even a complete list.
