Pardon my sarcasm, but in the spirit of blurting out crazy statements, I thought I would throw this headline into the ring.

A Chicago GOP candidate trying to unseat 9th District Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D) is getting national attention for her ridiculous statements about Gays and Lesbians in an interview with The Chicago Daily Herald.

Susanne Atanus believes that autism and forms of dementia are punishments sent by God because of the growing support for marriage equality in the country and the prevalence of abortion.

“I am a conservative Republican and I believe in God first,” Atanus said at an endorsement session with the Daily Herald on Monday.

“God is angry. We are provoking him with abortions and same-sex marriage and civil unions,” she said. “Same-sex activity is going to increase AIDS. If it’s in our military it will weaken our military. We need to respect God.”

David Earl Williams, III, who is competing with Atanus for the Republican nomination is considerably more moderate, but not without liabilities as a candidate. In response, he said, “AIDS is spread by unsafe sex between any couple, not just gay couples.”

But Atanus may have a chance in the primaries. Williams is currently fighting a judge’s ruling that he attend anger management classes and undergo a mental health assessment after a former girlfriend filed a domestic violence protection order against him. She also alleges that he tried to get her fired from her job and kicked out of school by impersonating her online.

Williams says he doesn’t’ support same-sex marriage, but he thinks the government should stay out of it.

Amen to that.
