Trust Me, My Gayness Won’t Rub Off on You
Anti-gay discrimination legislation is popping up all over the country. Nervous Nellie Republicans who think that their homophobia will mask their own latent homosexuality are busy-busy, writing bills that will roll back the legal victories the LGBT community has obtained in the past few years.
Bills under the guise of “religious protection” have been introduced in Ohio, Mississippi, Kansas, Idaho, South Dakota, Tennessee and Oklahoma. All were stuck down, except in Arizona, where it passed the Arizona Legislature Thursday evening. The bill that would allow business owners asserting their religious beliefs to refuse service to gays, is now headed to Republican Gov. Jan Brewer’s desk.
The 33-27 vote by the House puts Arizona back at the forefront of a embarrassing piece of legislation four years after the state enacted an immigration crackdown that caused a national furor.
Republicans stressed that the bill is about protecting religious freedom and not discrimination. However, it will allow any business, church or person to cite the law as a defense in any action brought by the government or individual claiming religious discrimination. All but three Republicans voted in favor of it.
