Cruz In For A Bruisin’
Ted Cruz is to marriage equality what Bull Connor was to desegregation.
In an effort to get ahead of legislation that would overturn Texas’ state DOMA, US Senate Republican Ted Cruz has introduced the “State Marriage Defense Act.” If passed, the bill would cede marriage definition to states for federal purposes, which would effectively reverse the gains same-sex couples made after the Defense of Marriage Act was overturned by the Supreme Court last summer.
“It will ensure the federal government gives the same deference to the 33 states that define marriage as the union between one man and one woman as it does to the 17 states that have chosen to recognize same-sex unions,” said a statement issued by the authors, Cruz and Sen. Mike Lee of Utah.
Given the Democratic majority in the Senate, it is almost certain that Cruz and Lee’s bill will not pass, and President Obama, whose administration stopped defending the law in court before the Supreme Court decided United States v. Windsor, will not sign a bill that lets states decide whether same-sex couples were eligible for federal benefits.
Hopefully, residents of the state of Texas are grateful for his attention to this dead issue. Apparently there aren’t more important matters going on in the state.
